CLINTON, Miss. - The Jackson State University women's tennis team recorded its 18th victory of the season by beating the Mississippi College Choctaws 6-1 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. While the Lady Tigers won the men's team fell 3-4 to the Choctaws.

The Lady Tigers won two of the three games in doubles play and won five of six in singles play. The team of Fungisai Chambwe and Angela Rose beat Sarah Sprayberry and Hillary Mathony 8-1 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles Paulina Vargas and Teegra Cross beat Emily Newman and Claire Cox 8-3. JSU's only doubles loss came at the No. 3 position where Valentina Prado and Geneva Warren lost to Audra Nichols and Jena Tetzlaff 4-8.

In singles No. 1 Chambwe beat Sprayberry 6-2, 6-4, No. 2 Prado lost to Matheny 3-6, 4-6, No. 3 Vargas defeated Newman 6-2, 6-1, No. 4 Cross beat Nichols 6-0, 6-0 and Warren and Rose won their games at the 5 and 6 positions.

With the win the Lady Tigers improve to an 18-3 record.

On the men's side Alejandro Martinez and Sergio Salinas beat Michael Ward and Patrick Stanton at No. 2 doubles. In singles action Tendai Kuwaza beat Stanton 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 at the No. 2 position. Martinez (No. 3) beat Ward 6-3, 7-5 and Salinas defeated Jerrod Rayborn 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 position. With the loss the Tigers have a 13-7 record.

JSU will return to action April 19-22 for the 2007 SWAC Championships in Alexandria, La.
