NEW ORLEANS, La. - Coming off their 2008 SWAC Indoor Track and Field victory, the Jackson State Lady Tigers Track and Field team captured first place in the 2008 SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Monday evening at the Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

Lisa Quinn, Taji Dorsey, Courtney Prentiss and Tayari Clay took gold for Jackson State in the 4x100 meter relay with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 45.65. In the 4x400 the Lady tigers took second behind Grambling State with a time of  3.46:31 just two seconds behind first place.

Toniece Williams won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.50 and Marlisa Hamlett won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 60.03. In the field events, Danielle Miller won the discus throw with a mark of 41.19.

The 2008 SWAC Most Outstanding Female Field Performer went to Lady Tiger Leadrianna White. White dominated the field events with first-place finishes in he women's hammer and javelin throw with marks of 138 feet and 118 feet respectively.  White also place ninth in the women's shot put and 11th in discus throw. The 2008 SWAC Most Outstanding Female Track Performer was awarded to Vasity Chemweno of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.  She won the women's 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run. 

With the victory, Coach Banks received the 2008 SWAC Coach of the Year honor.

The Jackson State Tigers finished third with 120 points. The 4x400 meter relay team qualified for NCAA Regionals with a time of 3:09.04. The team was made up of Allen Senegal, Derrick Ray, Debodrick Walton and Schafer Sherrer. Justin Vance took gold in the-100 meter dash (10.93) and Courtney Irby took gold in the 800-meter run (1:50.45).

In the field events Senegal won the long jump with a distance of 7.23 meters, Afolabi Ayanwale won the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying jump of 15.34 meters. Ronnel Jones won the shot put with a toss of 15.11.
