(CLEMSON, SC) - (CLEMSON, SC) - The Jackson State men's Track & Field team concluded the second day by improving on last year's results in the Clemson Opener. On the final day of the 2006 Clemson Opener Eric Speer and Courtney Irby took first and second place in the 800 m run. Speer posted the fastest time in the event with a 1:53.88 mark. Irby finished with a time of 1:56.35. The Tigers also had three other top two finishes. Brandon Woods took second place in the 60 m hurdles, by finishing with an 8.24 time. Derrick Ray followed Woods for third place with a time of 8.31. LaVarius Giles proved to be a bright sport for the Tigers. He posted the second fastest time in the nation in the 60 m dash. Giles finished in second place with a 6.79 time. Giles just missed qualifying for the NCAA provisional time (6.74). "He has had only a few practices with the team and he has turned out to give us an unexpected boost," said JSU head coach Edmond Donald. The JSU men's 4x400 m relay team also finished in second place with a 3:19.65 time. William Johnson, Speer, Alan Senegal and Schafer Sherrer made up the 4x400 team. "I'm extremely encouraged by the efforts of these young me," said Donald. "I look forward to getting back to work and getting the kinks out." JSU will return to action on January 7 when the Tigers participate in the Tennessee State Ed Temple Indoor Meet in Nashville, Tenn.
