JSU'S Cortes Leads Minority Collegiate Golf Championship

Florida A&M University from Tallahassee, stormed to the top of the leaderboard in Division I at the 21st PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship after tallying a two-day total of 1-under 575. The Rattlers rallied to overtake defending champion University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg with 18-holes remaining. The Broncs are 6-shots back with a two-day total of 6-over-par 581. Raul Cortes of Mexico City, Mexico, began his round on the back nine and fired a 2-under-par 70 for the second consecutive day to a share the 36-hole lead in the Division I individual standings with first-round leader James Petty of Grand Blanc, Mich., at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. "I played a very similar round today and was able to capitalize with birdies on Nos. 6, 11, 13 and 14," said Cortes, who started today in a tie for third place, 2-strokes off the pace. "I missed a short putt on No. 16 and also 3-putted No. 1, but had a strong finish and am pleased with my position going into the final round." Over 170 contestants from 36 colleges and universities, representing 13 countries comprise the field for the 2007 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. The Championship concludes after the third round tomorrow, May 13. State Farm Insurance and The Golf Channel have combined to produce a one-hour Championship highlight programs, which will air on June 6 at 3:00 P.M. EDT and on June 23 at 4:00 P.M. EDT.
