JACKSON, Miss. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2007 All-Conference team selections Monday afternoon. The Jackson State Tigers were well represented with six selections. Four JSU football players made first team and two received second team nods. Senior center Lorenzo Breland was named a first team offensive lineman and senior Daniel Brooks was named as a first team defensive lineman. Two sophomores, free safety Malcolm Palmer and kicker Eric Perri, were also named to the first team. Defensive tackle Corey Clark and linebacker Marcellus Speaks were voted onto the second team. Breland helped lead a JSU O-line that is ranked 29th in the NCAA in passing offense, No. 2 in the SWAC in scoring offense, No. 2 in pass offense, No. 3 in total offense, No. 3 in red zone offense. The JSU offensive line has given up only 20 sacks (No. 3 in the SWAC). Brooks was the leader of the Tiger defense as he recorded 45 tackles, 12.5 tackles for a loss and recorded seven sacks. He had a season high 10 tackles against Arkansas -Pine Bluff. Brooks was also named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week once this season. Palmer burst onto the scene as a ball hawking safety for JSU. He is third on the team in tackles with 62 and is tied for first on the team with four interceptions (tied for third in the SWAC and tied for 27th in the NCAA). He also was named Defensive Player of the Week once this season. Perri finished the season as one of Jackson State's most dependable offensive weapons as a place kicker. He made 17 of his 24 field goal attempts (70.8 percent - leads the SWAC) and set two school records. He nailed a 50-yarder against Tennessee State which is the longest made field goal in JSU history and his 17 made field goals is a single season high for JSU.
Clark was a disruptive force to opposing offensive lines. He finished with 49 tackles (fourth on the team), 15.5 tackles for a loss (first on the team, fourth in the SWAC and tied for 15th in the NCAA) and five sacks. Speaks, who seemed to be around the ball on just about every play, led the team in tackles with 77 (tied for 12th in the SWAC), 11.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks. |
