JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State football team had its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday afternoon at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The practice lasted just over two hours on a pleasantly mild summer day. One day after having the team's first practice in full pads, both the JSU offense and defense showed signs of good things to come during the 2008 season. Highlights of the day include: During goal line drills Marcel Frost caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Mosley. In 7-on-7 drills freshman quarterback Dedric McDonald connected with transfer Bloi-Dei Dorzon on a swing pass that went 60-yards. During the actual scrimmage, both the first and second team offenses moved the ball pretty well on the Tigers defense, although the JSU first unit did not allow a TD. McDonald, a tall lanky kid, displayed a graceful stride and athleticism, as he scored on a 35-yard TD run up the middle. JSU's other freshman signal caller, Dominick Britt, would not be outdone. He also had a long run, before hooking up with tight end Cedric Dixon on a 20-yard gain. He threw a 38-yard TD pass to Rashad Smith. Dorzon scored on a 20 plus-yard run. Defensively, JSU's returners Marcellus Speaks, Domonique Johnson, Malcolm Palmer and Marcus Benard all were solid. Speaks lined players up in position, while JSU QBs did not throw in Johnson's direction. Palmer and Benard just seemed to end up where the ball was. Terrance Banks, Sam Washington and Larry Dennis also looked good. Head coach Rick Comegy said he liked the way things are headed with the team, but some work still needs to be done.
"We did some good things out there today, but we still have a lot to improve on," Comegy said. The Tigers will return to practice Sunday at 11 am. JSU will open the 2008 season against the Hampton Pirates on Sunday, Aug. 31 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. Kick off is set for 1 pm. |
