Erik Haw running ball against Texas Southern

Erik Haw running ball against Texas Southern

Sept. 14, 2007

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Jimmy Oliver threw two touchdown passes and helped Jackson State win its first game of the season with a 28-7 victory over Texas Southern on Thursday night. The Tigers (1-2, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) racked up the team's largest offensive output of the season. Texas Southern (0-3, 0-3) managed just 30 total yards and turned the ball over five times during a steady downpour as the remains of Hurricane Humberto pushed through central Mississippi. Both Oliver's touchdown passes -- a 23-yard pass to Kethonne McLaurin and a 24-yard strike to Jaymar Johnson -- came in the first quarter as Jackson State built a 21-0 lead. Johnson added a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. Erik Haw's 11-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter put Jackson State ahead 28-0. Texas Southern's only score came on Brent Wilson's short run late in the third quarter.
