MEMPHIS, Tennessee- In front of an announce crowd of 50,879 at the Liberty Bowl Stadium , the Tigers of Jackson State University were defeated by the Tigers of Tennessee State 13 -16 in the rainy nail biter to close out the 18th Annual Southern Heritage Classic weekend in Memphis, Tennessee.

With an early mistake by the Tigers of Tennessee State, Jackson State gets on the board early with a one yard run by Trae Rutland and a point after attempt by Eric Perri, with 10:45 left in first quarter action, to give the Tigers of Jackson State a 7-0 first quarter lead.

A five yard run by Terrence Right of Tennessee State, with 0:44 seconds remaining in the half, cut the lead to one point, giving JSU a 7-6 edge over TSU.

Jackson State's Eric Perri connected on a 44 yard field goal to send Jackson State into the half with a 10-6 lead.

To open third quarter play, JSU's Eric Perri, set a school record with a 50 yard field goal, giving Jackson State a 13-7 lead with13:27 remaining in the quarter.

With 8:03 remaining in play, Terrence Wright of Tennessee State scored TSU's only touchdown of the half, tying the game 13-13. A blocked kick by Dominique Rodgers of TSU gave Tennessee State the ball with 3:53 remaining in the game to set up the game winning field goal as time expires.

The win gives Tennessee State its fifth straight victory over JSU in as many years, as the Tigers of Jackson State fall 0-2 on the season.

"We are going to get back at it and get ready for the next game," said Erik Haw.

"We did some good things and some bad things tonight," said JSU head coach Rick Comegy. "In this game you have to have a short memory and get ready for the next opponent.

 

 

Jackson State resumes action on September 13, as they take on the Tigers of Texas Southern at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, MS. The game will be aired on ESPNU. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
