JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State Tigers rebounded and got a win over the Stillman Tigers in the first annual W.C. Gorden Classic at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday evening.

JSU's Bloi-Dei Dorzon led JSU offensively with 111 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. JSU quarterback followed with 64 yards. He also passed for 57 and a TD. Carlos Simpson caught a team high two passes for 19 yards.

Darrell Nevis led Stillman as he passed for 81 yards and a touchdown. He completed 10 of 23 attempts and had an interception. Quinn Porter was Stillman's leading rusher with 35 yards.

JSU got on the scoreboard first when Dorzon found pay dirt on a 13 yard run. Eric Perri's extra point kick gave JSU a 7-0 lead.

Stillman scored its only points of the game when Nevis connected with Brown on a six-yard pass play. Peter Obradovic's point after kick tied the game 7-7 with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.

The J-State Tigers scored the final 10 points of the game. At the 14:51 mark in the fourth Rutland found Simpson for a 10-yard touchdown pass, capping a seven play, 29 yard drive. With 9:03 remaining in the game Perri connected on a 39-yard field goal to make the final score 17-7.

"It was good getting this win so we can know what getting one under your belt," said JSU head coach Rick Comegy. "We have not played at the level that we are capable of. We started out slow offensively today, but we got a win."

Speaks was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Game and Stillman's Kenny Brown was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Game.

Jackson State will return to action next Saturday when the Tigers travel to Memphis, Tennessee to face the Tennessee State Tigers in the Southern Heritage Classic.
