Nov. 24, 2007 LAS VEGAS, NV - Grant Maxey scored a career high 23 points and pulled down a game high nine rebounds to lead the Jackson State University men's basketball team to its first win of the season, by defeating Iona 74-70 in the final round of the Las Vegas Tournament Saturday afternoon. Maxey went 9-12 from the field and 4-6 from the free throw line. He also recorded two blocked shots. Jeremy Caldwell followed with 16 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor and going 4-4 at the free throw line. Darrion Griffin and Chris Hyche scored 12 and 11 points respectively. JSU (1-5, 0-0) led for most of the game and took a 34-29 lead into halftime. At the 16:42 mark Iona cut JSU's lead down to one point (40-39). The Tigers then went on a 16-4 run. Iona made another late run, but Jackson State held on for its first win of the season. Jackson State shot 47 percent from the field for the game (25-53) and Iona connected at a 51 percent rate (23-51). The Tigers shot 57 percent from the line (21-37) and Iona made 67 percent of its free throws (16-24). Jackson State will return to action Nov. 27 when the Tigers host
Southeastern Louisiana at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly
Center in non-conference action. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. (CST).
