JACKSON, Miss.- Coming off of their first conference loss to the Southern Jaguars, the Tigers looked to improve their SWAC record versus the Panthers of Prairie View. However, Grant Maxey's team high 16 points wasn't enough to surge the Tigers (5-12/3-2) past the Panthers, (2-13/1-3). Prairie View gets their first SWAC win, 82-72 win in front of a JSU home crowd of 863 fans.
With the loss, Jackson State falls to 3-2, while Prairie View improves to 1-3 in SWAC play. An explosive first half of shooting and a 53.1field goal percentage in the first half, gives the Panthers a 39-31 lead, going into the half. Brian Ezeh led all scores with 13 in the first half. Darrion Griffin had nine points for the Tigers. The Tigers use a 6-0 run to pull the score within two, 37-39 with 18:33 left in the game. Defensive stops by senior guard, Catraiva Givens help tie the score, 46-46 with 15:31 remaining. With 11:43 left in the game the Tigers take a 51-48 lead with a pair of free throws by Givens. The Panthers go on a late 13-6 run to increase their lead by six, 61-55 with 6:58 left in the game. With back to back three pointers by Prairie View, the Panthers extend their lead, 74-58 with 4:40 left in the game. Prairie View finished the game shooting 52.3 percent, while Jackson State shot only 31.6 percent. The Tigers play host to the Texas Southern Tigers Monday in the second game of the SWAC double header. Tip-off is set for 7:30.
