Jan. 15, 2008 BATON ROUGE, LA - Despite a game high 24 points from Darrion Griffin (career high) and 18 points from Grant Maxey the Jackson State men's basketball team fell 85-69 to the Southern University Jaguars in SWAC action Monday night. Griffin went 6-11 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line. Maxey went 5-11 from the field and 8-12 from the line. Maxey also pulled down seven rebounds. Garrison Johnson was the final Tiger to reach double-digit scoring with 12 points. Three Jags scored in double-figures. Chris Davis scored 17 points, Jazz Williams added 16 and Julius Ingram finished with 10 points. Jackson State started fast out the gate, taking a 15-6 lead over the first six minutes of the game. Maxey scored 10 of JSU's 15. Southern took a 24-23 lead, its first of the game, at the 7:13 mark. The Jags went on a 14-4 run to end the first half, taking a 42-33 lead into halftime. Southern outscored JSU 43-36 in the second half. Halfway through the second half JSU tried to make a run, converting two 4-point plays in a three-minute span. Johnson hit a 3-pointer, was fouled and made the free throw at the 8:23 mark. At the 4:34 mark Griffin did the same, but it was not enough. For the game JSU shot 35% from the field, 29% from 3-point range and 76% from the line. Southern shot 53% from the field, 58% in 3-pointers and 76% from the line. Jackson State will return to action Jan. 19 when the Tigers host Prairie View A&M in SWAC action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
