Jan. 5, 2008 JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State men's basketball team improved to a 3-11 overall record and a 1-0 SWAC mark by beating the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 87-74 Saturday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Grant Maxey recorded a double-double in 35 minutes of work. Maxey finshed with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. He went 8-10 from the field and 8-9 from the free throw line. Jeremey Caldwell came up three rebounds shy of a double-double. He recorded 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Darrion Grffin was the final Tiger to score in double-digits. He also finished with 17 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor (3-5 in 3-pointers). Trant Sampson led Alabama A&M with 18 points on 5-10 shooting. Jackson State held a 52-41 lead at half time. In the first half JSU shot 60 percent from the field (17-28) and Alabama A&M connected at a 40 percent rate (13-32). Both teams shot 78 percent from the free throw line in the first half. JSU made 18-23 and AAMU went 11-14. In the second half Jackson State shot 45 percent (11-24) and the Bulldogs shot 44 percent (12-27). For the game JSU shot 53 percent and Alabama A&M shot 42. The Tigers out rebounded the Bulldogs 40-28. JSU dished out 15 assists and recorded eight steals. AAMU recorded six assists and 11 steals. Jackson State will return to action Monday, Jan. 7 when the Tigers host Alabama State in SWAC action. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
