JACKSON, Miss.- The Jackson State baseball team was eliminated by the Southern Jaguars in the second game Friday evening on the third day of the 2007 SWAC Baseball Tournament. Game 1 Day Three opened with a defensive battle - for two innings. In what many thought could a defensive game turned quickly as Prairie View used the middle innings to build a lead and finish with a 14-3 victory. Four Jackson State errors in the game led to several of the Panther runs during the game. After one run in the third inning, Prairie View posted two more runs in the fourth to claim a 3-0 lead. Jackson State then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth - capped by a two-run homer to right center field by Derek Johnson. The Panthers came right back and began the scoring counterpunch with a six-run fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by a three-run shot to left field by Brandon Whitby. Prairie View would add five runs in the sixth for the final decision. Panther pitcher Terry Salters (5-3) worked four innings allowing five hits and three walks while striking out one. David de la Calle (5-3) worked 4 2/3 innings striking out one in the loss for Jackson State. Game 2 The Southern Jaguars advanced to the SWAC Baseball Championship game Friday night by beating the Jackson State Tigers 19-10 in semifinal action at Smith-Wills Stadium. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. In the third inning Southern broke the game open, scoring five run. The Jags added another in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. The Tigers continued to battle as they cut the lead to 8-6 in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth Southern added two more runs to make the score10-6. Both teams scored three in the sixth. JSU scored its final run of the game in the seventh inning. Southern finally put the game out of reach in the eight, with four runs. Brad McDavid led the Jaguar offense, going 4-5 with two runs and seven RBI. Victor Franklin went 2-4 with four runs and a RBI. Gerard Gause went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI.
LaDerek Camper led JSU, going 1-4 with a run and three RBI. Camper hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Southern will take on Prairie View A&M Saturday, May 19 for the 2007 SWAC Baseball Championship at Smith-Wills Stadium. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. |
