Played under Coach Jeff Morrow and batted .584 with five homeruns and 32 RBI his senior year of high school. Derek earned All-State and All-Metro honors in 2003.

COLLEGE
During the 2006 season he played in 21 games ... Had a batting average of .158 ... Had 6 runs, 3 hits, 1 double, 4 RBIs, 1 stolen base ... Had 13 putouts and a fielding percentage of 1.000.
